The Wombambino baby sleeping bag

A baby sleeping bag is a great way to keep newborns, as well as older children, warm and safe at night. There are many different types, models and sizes of baby sleeping bags, but in general they have always been designed with the same basic idea in mind. They should create a secure and, above all, safe sleeping environment so that the baby can sleep better and more peacefully at night.

Since every baby has individual needs and not one sleeping bag works for all babies, we present our Wombi to you, which helps to get used to swaddling and serves as a baby sleeping bag for neurodermatitis, as it prevents severe scratching. It is the solution between swaddle and classic baby sleeping bag.

  • The swaddle bag

The swaddle bag, or simple swaddling, is primarily intended for newborns who have become accustomed to the limited environment in the womb. They often find it difficult to feel the same sense of security and security outside of the baby bump. The technique of swaddling is simple. A cloth or tight sack is wrapped around the baby's body, with the arms held in place as if in a sling. This creates an environment similar to that in the womb and encourages babies to have a calmer and better night's sleep helps.

  • Our interim solution: The Wombi baby sleeping bag

Our sleeping bag is unique: As a solution between swaddle and baby sleeping bag, our Wombi is the first closed baby sleeping bag that combines the security of being in the womb with full freedom of movement. Similar to swaddling, the slight resistance from your closed hands provides a natural sense of security and security, helping you calm down and help you fall asleep. It is therefore the best support for weaning from swaddling. Because in contrast to the swaddle, it does not restrict the freedom of movement and development and, thanks to the wide and stretchy fabric, still gives the baby the opportunity to kick or crawl.

  • The classic baby sleeping bag

The classic baby sleeping bag is available in different versions. It is offered as a sleeveless option for the summer and as a long sleeve sleeping bag for the colder nights. However, the hands and often the feet are not covered and do not protect against heat loss and cooling down. Putting it on and taking it off quickly when changing diapers also proves to be very cumbersome, since the sleeping bag usually has to be completely removed and not just the lower part can be opened. For many parents, the conventional baby sleeping bag is therefore out of the question.

Baby sleeping bag for neurodermatitis

Every sixth to twelfth child in Germany suffers from neurodermatitis or atopic dermatitis. It is particularly important to keep an eye on the little ones' skin and to regularly care for and moisturize it. However, simple measures are often not enough to relieve the severe itching at night.

We at Wombambino can help, because the Wombi baby sleeping bag has closed hands that prevent scratching and chafing. He replaces the unloved cotton gloves, which don't stay on his hands all night due to the constant rubbing and moving. In order to protect your baby's delicate skin even better, we also paid attention to a skin-friendly and breathable material during production that is soft and does not pinch.

This makes our unique sleeping bag particularly suitable as a baby sleeping bag for neurodermatitis or other skin diseases such as cradle cap that cause severe itching.

Give up the habit of swaddling

When it comes to newborn sleep, swaddling is one of the most recommended techniques for peaceful sleep. However, when the baby is getting stronger and the swaddling begins to limit range of motion and therefore motor development, or when he starts rolling on his tummy, it is time to break the habit of swaddling. However, as the baby has become accustomed to falling asleep in a cramped and safe environment, this is often very difficult.

This is where our Wombi baby sleeping bag helps, which, due to the slight resistance of the closed hands and feet, gives a feeling of tightness similar to that of the swaddle. As the best alternative to swaddling or as a solution to gently weaning swaddling, the unique cut also helps to counteract the early childhood Moro reflex. The limitation restricts strong twitching and the associated waking up of the babies. So it not only helps your baby to feel safe and secure after being weaned from swaddling, but also to your little one sleeping better overall.

Here you can find out what you need to look out for when buying a baby sleeping bag

The baby sleeping bag is indispensable for parents and their newborn. Especially in the first year of life, a safe sleeping environment for your baby is very important to minimize the risk of sudden infant death. The baby sleeping bag is the best choice for newborns, as it gives your child full freedom of movement without kicking itself free, cooling down or overheating.

In our baby sleeping bag guide you will find out what you need to look out for when buying a sleeping bag.

  1. Which sleeping bag size is right for my baby?
  2. What should my baby wear under the baby sleeping bag?
  3. What material should the baby sleeping bag be made of?
  4. More frequently asked questions about baby sleeping bags

1. What size sleeping bag do I need for my baby?

One of the main functions of our Wombi baby sleeping bags is the transition from swaddling to free sleep. In order to ensure this main function of the Wombi, it is particularly important that the babies feel a slight resistance on their closed hands. This gives them the feeling of safety and security that they know from the womb and that they need to calm down before going to sleep.

By switching to a Wombi, it can also happen in individual cases that a baby needs some time until it feels really comfortable in its new baby sleeping bag. The Wombi should then first be tried out during a short nap so that the little ones can get used to the new baby sleeping bag.

What sleeping bag size do I need now? During production, we deliberately made sure that your baby can wear the sleeping bag for several months. In order to guarantee the functions of the Wombi optimally, choosing the right size is crucial.

Find the right size:

It's very simple: Measure your child from the shoulder to the sole of the foot. Then compare with the sizes below:

  • Size XS: up to 50cm - about dress size 50/56
  • Size S: 51-60cm - about dress size 62/74
  • Size M: 61-70cm - about dress size 80/86
  • Size L: 71-80cm - about dress size 92/98
  • Size XL: from 81cm - about dress size 98/104

However, please note: Your child should grow out of the baby sleeping bag, not into it!

If it is too big, there is a risk that your baby will slip into the sleeping bag and breathing will be restricted. For mothers who wean their baby from swaddling or use the sleeping bag as an alternative to swaddling, we recommend starting with size "XS".

2. What should my baby wear under the baby sleeping bag?

What your child should wear under the sleeping bag depends on the time of year, the room temperature and how your baby feels. Since your little one should neither sweat nor freeze at night, it is important to keep an eye on the body temperature. You can easily check this with the neck test: put two fingers on your baby's neck. As a rule, you quickly notice whether it feels sweaty or is rather too cool. If the neck test does not give a clear answer, you can also determine your baby's temperature using the following criteria.

Important: Cold hands and feet are NOT a sign that the child is too cold, as in the first few months they cannot get their blood flowing by themselves.

Is my baby warm or cold?

Signs that your baby may be too cold and may need to put on one or more layers of clothing or increase the room temperature are:

  • the skin looks pale, slightly bluish and is generally cold
  • the child wakes up frequently and all other factors such as full nappy, hunger etc. can be ruled out
  • The child often wakes up early in the morning and cannot get back to sleep.

Signs that your child may be too warm and may need to have one or more layers of clothing removed or the room temperature lowered are:

  • the child has a red head or red cheeks
  • the child is sweating on the body
  • the child has a rapid heart rate and/or breathing

3. Which baby sleeping bag for my baby: Should you prefer a summer or winter model?

Depending on the temperature of the room and the time of year, we will help you find the right baby sleeping bag model in our clothing guide and also advise you on what your child should wear under the sleeping bag. These are recommendations only. Ultimately, you have to consider your baby's individual needs and decide what your child should wear under the sleeping bag based on the room temperature.

We recommend our winter baby sleeping bag from October or when the room temperature is below 19°C. On the other hand, we recommend our summer baby sleeping bag from April or at a room temperature of 18-20°C.

  • Temperature below 14°C: If the room temperature is below 14°C, we recommend wearing a long-sleeved bodysuit and pajamas with long sleeves and feet under our cozy 2.5 TOG winter sleeping bag. If necessary, this consists of a similar thick material such as fleece. As an option, we always recommend putting on a footmuff, which will keep the little ones nice and warm even on the coldest nights. This does not affect the function of our baby sleeping bag.
  • Temperature 14-16°C: At a temperature of 14-16°C in the room, we recommend putting on a long-sleeved bodysuit and pajamas with long sleeves and legs under our thick 2.5 TOG baby sleeping bag, similar to temperatures below 14°C.
  • Temperature 17-18°C: At room temperatures of 17-18°C, we recommend our 1.5 TOG or 2.5 TOG baby sleeping bag for the winter, depending on your needs. With our thick winter sleeping bag, a long-sleeved body under the Wombi is sufficient, but with the lighter 1.5 TOG sleeping bag, we recommend a long-sleeved body and long pajamas.
  • Temperature 19-21°C: From a room temperature of 19-21°C, both our 0.5 TOG summer sleeping bag and our 1.5 TOG baby sleeping bag can be worn. For our summer sleeping bag, we recommend a short-sleeved bodysuit in combination with pajamas with long sleeves and legs. With our 1.5 TOG sleeping bag, however, either a long-sleeved bodysuit or pajamas with long sleeves and legs.
  • Temperature 21-24°C: From a temperature of 21-24°C in the room, our thin 0.5 TOG summer sleeping bag is the best choice. With a short-sleeved bodysuit or pajamas with short sleeves and legs underneath, your child is perfectly dressed for the warmer days.
  • Temperature above 24°C: At room temperatures above 24°C, we recommend wearing only one diaper under the summer wombi to prevent overheating and heat build-up.

4. What material should the baby sleeping bag be made of?

So that your baby can wear and love the sleeping bag without hesitation, care should always be taken when choosing that skin-friendly and non-toxic materials have been processed, as the little ones are in direct contact with the fabric over a long period of time.

We at Wombambino rely on the highest quality when manufacturing our baby sleeping bags. Our fabrics are made from organic cotton and have been tested according to the OekoTex® certificate . They are free of harmful substances and chemicals and therefore harmless to your baby's health. The fabric is particularly soft and breathable, so it is comfortable to wear without pinching. When processing the two-way zip, we paid particular attention to protecting the baby's delicate skin and sewn in fabric protection for the chin and for the length of the zip to prevent possible injuries. Matching the seasons, the Wombi is available in different fabric thicknesses and cute designs for the summer baby sleeping bag and winter baby sleeping bag.

  • Baby sleeping bag summer: A summer sleeping bag made of a light, unlined, breathable fabric such as cotton is perfect for warm days. In combination with a wide, casual cut, summer sleeping bags protect your baby from heat build-up or overheating. Our jersey summer fabrics are ideal for the period from late March to mid-October .
  • Baby sleeping bag winter: A winter sleeping bag consists of warm materials such as down or a lined cotton fabric. A higher TOG value should be selected for particularly cold nights and slightly cooler bedrooms. Our fluffy sweat fabrics are perfect for the cooler months from October to March.

We have made our popular Wombi in an extra lined version especially for winter. It achieves a cuddly TOG 2.5 value and, together with our closed turn-up sleeves, ensures that your baby always has warm hands and feet, even in the cold season.

All in all, buying a baby sleeping bag is an important decision when it comes to creating a safe and peaceful sleeping environment for your baby. If the right size, model and clothing underneath are carefully selected, you can be sure that your baby will sleep safe and secure, just like in the womb.

5. Frequently asked questions about baby sleeping bags

Why a baby sleeping bag and not a blanket?

Parents are advised to put babies in a sleeping bag for the first few months of life instead of covering them with a blanket to reduce the risk of cot death. The reason for this is that babies can easily slip under the covers or out of the covers, which can lead to overheating or hypothermia. A sleeping bag is therefore the best choice for your baby as it ensures an even temperature and cannot put your baby at risk.

How long a baby sleeping bag?

Since the baby sleeping bag is the best way to keep your baby safe at night, experts recommend keeping it for as long as possible. However, you should always pay attention to the individual needs of your baby.

Our Wombi is available from a dress size of approx. 50/56 to dress size 98/104, so that even small children can wear it. With the wide and stretchy fabric, it doesn't restrict your little ones' freedom of movement and they can romp around in it carefree.

How often to wash baby sleeping bag?

Since your baby spends a lot of time in the sleeping bag, it is important to keep it clean and hygienic. In principle, it is sufficient to wash it once a week, but it is more common for something to go wrong or for your child to spit up. Then the sleeping bag should be washed as needed. Make sure you don't use fabric softener on the sleeping bags, as this can be irritating to baby's sensitive skin.

For initial equipment after the birth, it can be very helpful to have several baby sleeping bags at home so that you can quickly fall back on another one in an emergency.

What should I look out for when buying a baby sleeping bag?

When buying a sleeping bag, we recommend that you pay attention to the right size, the right model, comfortable materials and high-quality workmanship. As already mentioned in our guide, you should always pay attention to the room temperature and dress your child accordingly under the sleeping bag.
